Indeed, empirical research doesn’t tend to find a significant impact related to professional sports franchises / stadia.  

But, that the average deal will 'likely cost more' than the benefit is NOT the same thing as saying that the local government should never subsidize a project.  Some subsidies are defensible… and should be defended.
