98% of Economists Oppose Tariffs

Martin Kennedy - Wednesday, October 02, 2019

In 1930, 1,028 economists sent a letter to Congress opposing the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act.  Congress passed it anyway.  The Great Depression deepened.

On May 3rd, 2018 over 1,100 economists signed a letter opposing Trump’s Trade war.  Neither did he listen.

The signers included economists from all 50 states, 15 Nobel laureates, and advisors to presidents Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush 2, and Obama.

Tariffs are taxes paid by American consumers and businesses.  Of course, now we’re taking that money and giving it to (some) farmers.

Maybe if you're part of the affluent wing of the GOP in Tennessee (or a GOP rep) you don't mind so much... but it hurts our farmers, our manufacturers, and people struggling for their crust of bread day-in and day-out.

In what universe is this conservative?  In what universe is this rational?
